If there’s a way to make a buck, humans will find it. Something as natural and earthy as eating, infant feeding and giving birth, and it’s made into something profitable.
Eating is a prime example. Eating is in our blood. We work to produce and prepare food lovingly for our kin, and gather around the table to eat. This is in our nature. Then we decide that’s not good enough. I’m talking of course about the over-processing and made artificial of our real food (aka apples, lettuce, grains, cheese) into packages and boxes, unnatural shapes, and such. Tasteless, warped and weird-looking, we had to be convinced to eat it (think rounded hams, perfectly square bright yellow cheese..) so.. the food manufacturing companies added sugar and salt, then some more sugar and salt, and pretty packaging with claims such as “It’s good for you”, “your children will like it”, “wholesome”, “healthy” or “low fat”.
Of course most of it is convenient. But life is not so convenient. Life is about experiencing and living, and it seems like we’re sucking the life out of life by worshipping the God of convenience. The more I research, the sicker I feel. Makes me want to go out into a pristine field and look for a real apple tree not sprayed with chemicals and pick out an apple from that tree and eat it. The next book on my list of books to read is definitely In Defense of Food by Michael Pollen.
